Editor’s Note
What is the foundation of the church? How can Christians discern whether its teaching and practices remain faithful to Christ? In Discerning the True Faith: Why the Three-Self and the Official Church Are Not the Orthodox Church of China, Sheng En addresses these questions from within the Chinese house-church tradition, drawing on historical accounts, public documents, and theological discussion.
The author examines the history, teaching, and governance of the Three-Self and official church system against three standards: the supreme authority of Scripture, the faith handed down by the apostles, and Christ’s position as the sole head of the church. His concern extends beyond registration to the question of who ultimately governs the church’s faith and practice. He distinguishes criticism of an institutional system from judgment of individual believers, acknowledging sincere pastors and Christians within official congregations. He also applies the same standards to house churches: remaining unregistered does not, by itself, establish orthodoxy.
This book presents a definite theological position and invites prayerful reflection, careful reading, and examination of Scripture. Readers should independently verify the sources cited in both the Chinese and English files, including historical accounts, quotations, dates, page references, and regulatory provisions, consulting original documents and their full context wherever possible. The booklet identifies matters still requiring verification. Making these editions available does not mean that this website has independently confirmed every claim; unresolved accounts should not be repeated as established facts.
